1. Blue Grass Valley Trail
From Monterey, follow US 220 north to Rt. 642. Turn left/west on Rt. 642 to junction with Rt. 640 in Blue Grass. Follow Rt. 640 the length of the Blue Grass Valley, crossing US 250 at Hightown. Turn left/east on Rt. 84 to US 220. Follow US 220 north to Monterey. Monterey > Blue Grass Valley > Monterey = 27.87 miles

2. Bullpasture Valley Trail
From Monterey, follow US 250 east to McDowell. Turn right/south on Rt. 678 into the Bullpasture Valley to Williamsville. Turn right on Rt. 614 and follow gravel road north to US 250.
McDowell > Bullpasture and Cowpasture Valleys > McDowell = 63.11 miles

 

 
 


3. US 220 (south) Bluebird Trail

From Monterey, follow US 250 south to the Bath County line.. This stretch of road is lined with bluebird houses. Monterey > Bath County line > Monterey- McDowell = 31.26 miles

4. Town of Monterey
Located at the junction of US 250 and 220, the town of Monterey is a designated bird sanctuary. A number of the town's residents are keen birders, and bird feeders and nesting boxes are located in yards and gardens throughout the town.

5. Laurel Fork
This is a remote wooded area requiring a lengthy scenic drive of 21 miles of well-graded, gravel road. Contact the Highland County Chamber of Commerce for a map and detailed directions.

 

6. Highland Wildlife Management Area (Jack Mountain)
The graveled road in this area is best suited to foot traffic and/or 4-wheel drive. Contact the Highland County Chamber of Commerce for a map and detailed directions.
